Games and entertainment - The biggest section of applications software,
Productivity software - ex. Word, Excel, Web browsers
Business and specialty software - CAD, desktop publishing, multimedia
Educational and reference - Encyclopedia, almanac

schedule tasks and meeting.
Desktop Accessories and PIMs - Personal Information Managers
accessories include calulators, address books, clock, etc. Many of these are
incorprated into e-mail organizer packages similar to Microsoft Outlook.
"Works" programs - contain several packages that are less powerful than their
corresponding stand alones.
"Suite" - contains several powerful stand alones but purchased together at a
heavily discounted price.
Web Browsers and the WWW

Desktop Publishing - ex. Quark Express and PageMaker
Project Management - PERT and GANT charts.
CAD - Computer Aided Design - used by engineers and architects to design parts
and buildings. (Go Autodesk!)
Drawing and Painting - Adobe Photoshop
6.5) Installing
Version - major upgrade 1.0 - 2.0
release - minor revisions - 1.0 - 1.1
forward compatible - new versions can run files created on older versions
backward compatible - old versions can run files created on newer versions
6.6) Ethics
Copyright - the entity who owns the copyright is the only entity allowed to
sell and profit from that copyright. They are also the only one allowed
to give it away.
Software piracy - illegal distribution of software
Network piracy - illegal distribution of software digitally via a network
Plagarism - using another's copyrighted materials for personal gain
Ownership of images and sounds - very tricky stuff. 10%?
Public Domain software, Freeware and Shareware
Public Domain - not protected by copyright
Freeware - 100% for all to use
Shareware - free to try, but your supposed to pay to buy. Authors of
shareware want people to disribute the software, but hope some
will pay for support or upgrade.
Licenses
Shrink-wrap - for a single system
Single user - multiple system, but regulated to one user at a time
Multiple-user - Allows several specific users to use the the software
Concurrent-use - regulate to a set number of users at a time
Site-license - all systems within a specific facility or business may install
and use the software.
