8.1) The Internet
  
  Developed by the U.S. department of defense, originally for sharing info
  among military, industry, and university resources. 
  
  TCP/IP - Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol
	
  Connecting to the Internet: 
    1) connection line
	2) Configuration and software
	3) ISP
	
  ISP - Internet Service Provider
  
  Online Service - an ISP that serves as a guide to the Internet and provides
  extra services.
  
  Tips for choosing an ISP
  
    local call

	e-mail software
	
  WWW- World Wide Web - multimedia portion
  
  E-mail - sending messages on the Internet
  
  Usenet newsgroups - post message on the Internet
  
  Mailing lists - collection of e-mail address
  
  FTP - File Transfer Protocol - how you put files on the WWW.
  
  Telnet - connect to remote computers, terminal emulator
  
  Gopher - older browsing tools - before web browsers
  
  Internet Addresses
  
  E-mail addresses - userid@domainname
  
  Web addresses - URL get forwarded to an IP address using DNS (Domain Name 
  Server)
  
8.2) The World Wide Web

  Multimedia and hypertext
  
  Multimedia - text, video, audio, and interactivity working together
  
  hypertext - text with links
  
  Popular uses of the web - 
  	research
	chatting
	obtaining news
	downloading software
	taking classes
	arranging travel plans
	shopping
	investments
	
  Browsing the Web - features of browsers
    locator
	bookmarks
	history
  
	Searching - search engines - Yahoo! Ask Jeeves
	Google Alta Vista

8.3) Online Services - who should use them?

  Online Services provide basically the same information as an ISP, but they
  package it so that it is easier to navigate
  
8.4) New Internet Technologies

  Telephones on the net
  Streaming Audio and Video - radio and TV on the net
  3-D on the net - VRML - Virtual Reality Modeling Language
  
  
8.5) Net loss? - downside of the Internet

  Library or TV - lots of information, but only a small percentage dedicated 
  to education.  About 80% of the Internet is pornography.
  
  information or marketing - many people feel the Internet is driven by
  marketing, not by the desire to find or provide information
  
  entertainment - many youngsters are only interested in the entertainment
  value of the Internet.
  
  Other sources are better - CD-ROM
