Presentation: Christian Ethics in Computers, Software, and Artificial Intelligence

One of Dr. Kolta’s presentations focused on his recently released book, Christian Ethics in Computers, Software, and Artificial Intelligence, which is now being used as a supplemental textbook in computer science courses.

The presentation explored the growing role computers, software systems, and artificial intelligence play in modern life and examined these technologies through the lens of Christian ethics and Biblical principles.

Topics included:

  • The ubiquity of computers and software in everyday life
  • Ethical software usage and software design
  • The impact of constant notifications and digital distractions
  • Ethical questions surrounding online content “sharing”
  • The increasing use of computers and AI systems in decision-making
  • The responsibilities of software designers and software users

The presentation emphasized that many ethical evaluations of modern technological issues change significantly when Biblical principles are considered. Examples were provided encouraging ethical software use while also encouraging developers and designers to intentionally build systems that promote ethical behavior and responsible engagement with technology.

Discussion on Artificial Intelligence and LLM Ethics

In addition to his primary presentation, Dr. Kolta also co-presented a session with Olaf Hall-Holt from St. Olaf College titled Ethical Use of LLMs: Existence? Strategies?

The session explored differing perspectives regarding the ethical use of Large Language Models (LLMs), including concerns expressed by educators, faculty members, and institutional leaders.

Topics discussed included:

  • Whether ethical use of LLMs is possible
  • Arguments both for and against AI-assisted work
  • Suggested ethical boundaries for LLM usage
  • Practical strategies for responsible AI use in academic and professional environments

The session also included discussion and brainstorming regarding how institutions and individuals can approach rapidly evolving AI technologies thoughtfully and responsibly.
